Philip Levine and solace (and me)
I just heard the news that Philip Levine has left this earth. The work he left behind is something we can find solace in when we miss his voice. So many great poems. I have fond memories of Phil Levine because he is a contributor to Solace in So Many Words, and we had a lot of correspondence about which poems of his to use. Saying thanks to Ernie Banks, #14 forever
I went down to Fourth Presbyterian Church on Michigan Avenue and Chestnut to say good-bye to Ernie Banks. I am so glad I did. After I viewed the casket and we went to the pews, I said my thanks to him. It is odd to me that pictures are taken at a church, of a casket, but since everyone else was doing it, I took my camera out too. Hey there sports fans. If you are into baseball, I‘ve got to think you’re mourning the death of the great Ernie Banks, #14. His face as a rookie ballplayer, which graced the front pages of the papers in Chicago, is something to behold: there’s a purity there not seen often. It shines through. Beautiful.
