News and calls for submissions

02/14/2016 By Ellen Beals 2 Comments

Good day! Hope your St. Valentine’s Day is sweet. I’ve been traveling so the pic at the left is taken from a plane. Every time I am on a plane and look out the window at clouds I think of Joni Mitchell's song Both Sides Now. Here’s what’s new with contributors. Donna Hilbert has some dynamite poems about her mother in the February Verse-Virtual—here’s the link. Tekla Dennison Miller has a new book published by Oak Tree Books. It's called Mother Rabbit. Here’s … [Read more...]

Hey there. Hope your Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Festivus was wonderful. The end of the year always brings out the "best of" lists. Solace in So Many Words contributors made a few of these T. C. Boyle’s novel The Harder They Come was named the best novel (700 pages or shorter) by Newsweek.  It was also named one of the best books of the year by The Express, by the San Francisco Chronicle, and other publications.  Also this year, T. C. Boyle  served as guest editor for The … [Read more...]

Good day!  Hope life is treating you well. Concerned about the stock market? You may want to read Elizabeth Kerlikowske's poem "The Two Worlds"  on the The New Verse News today (August 26, 20015). There's a whole section of poetry by E. Michael Desilets at the VerseWrights site; his latest to be posted is "Sidetrack's Last Haircut." The Chicago Writers Conference is coming up--September 25-27. Did I mention Donna Hilbert has five poems ("Mother in Satin," … [Read more...]

T. C. Boyle and a poem

Howdy-do friends.  May tomorrow! May tomorrow bring you happiness. Solace in So Many Words has many fine contributors but not many have made the best-seller list yet, that is, except for T. C. Boyle. His  latest book The Harder They Come is  #3 on the Los Angeles Times Bestseller List. (BTW, it makes a great Mother’s Day present.) The Los Angeles Times gives out Book Prizes during its Festival of Books and on April 18,  T. Coraghessan Boyle took home the  Robert Kirsch … [Read more...]

Spring, taxes, and news (Boyle and Aguero)

04/15/2015 By Ellen Beals Leave a Comment

April 15 is the day to file your taxes in the US.  Every year I vow to be more prepared so I am not looking for documents at the last minute or having to make a run to the accountant. But guess what? I never change and I am always somewhat frantic. The same with spring. Each year I pray for it, invoke it, ask that I be delivered from winter, and every time it arrives, I am somehow not quite ready for it.  I grumble a bit being awakened from that long winter’s nap. SISMW … [Read more...]
